As we wrap up the month of love, we decided to take a look at the websites that Ugandans are in love with these days. You must be wondering how we are measuring this love! Well for purposes of this article we measured your love for these websites by the number of times you visit them.

The “powers that be” decided last week that social media and mobile money services were a risk to public order and safety, so the telecoms turned them off on “orders from above”.  Personally I got the news at about 8:30 as I walked away from the polling station, weaving through the crowd of people waiting to cast their vote, cutting through the lines.

Uganda’s 2016 General election is now only hours away. Voting will be open at 7am and I suspect some voters might be in the lines even a few hours earlier. I will personally be at my polling station before 6am. As we have seen over the past year, social media has been very active with conversations on the issues around the election, and we expect that in the next few days we shall have it at its peak as tensions heighten, and there’s a lot of anxiety about how the process will go.

Social Media sites blocked as Uganda goes to the polls

We woke up to reports that many internet users in Uganda were having difficulty accessing their favorite social media sites, including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. A few are able to log on although the service is much slower than usual, but most are completely locked out.
